The Genesis of ATIRA – Ahmedabad Textile Industry’s Research Association is deep-rooted and interesting to know about. Textile was one such industry that the government planned to promote as it was one of the largest employment generators in the country. The same Government has decided to establish the Regional Research Association as a joint venture between the Textile Mills and Government.

Ahmedabad was the textile hub and known to be Manchester of the East. With so many textile mills flourished at that time, the city was early riser to catch the opportunity. The well informed and learned industrialist from Ahmedabad Mr. Kasturbhai Lalbhai and visionary scientist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai were first to take advantage of this policy. They registered a Society as Ahmedabad Textile Industry’s Research Association – famously known as ATIRA Ahmedabad in December 1947. The foundation stone for the ATIRA complex was laid by then Home Minister Shree Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and the building was inaugurated by then Prime Minister Shree Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Mr. Kasturbhai Lalbhai was the first Chairman and Dr. Vikram Sarabhai was the first Director of Society. The campus of ATIRA Ahmedabad is located at one of the finest localities of the city, and at a prominent distance from IIM Ahmedabad, Gujarat University and PRL – Physical Research Laboratory. The campus is spread across a 2,70,000 square meter area and has a plantation of more than 1,000 trees. ATIRA campus is also one of the jogger’s paradise in Ahmedabad.
